Recent updates to pet import process in Australia

moving with pets

If you’re planning to move with your furry friends to Australia, it’s important to be aware of the recent updates to the pet import process. As of 1 March 2023, there have been some significant changes that pet owners need to know about to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.

New import requirements for pets from New Zealand

If you’re importing pets from New Zealand, they must have been born in New Zealand or be a resident for at least 180 days before entry into Australia. Fortunately, pets from New Zealand will no longer require quarantine upon arrival in Australia.

Extended quarantine for pets from category 2 and category 3 countries

For pets from Category 2 and Category 3 countries, there are new requirements for quarantine upon arrival in Australia. Instead of 10 nights, they will now need to reside in Mickleham Quarantine Melbourne for a minimum of 30 nights.

Exemptions for reduced quarantine periods

However, there are some exemptions that allow pets from category 2 and category 3 countries to be eligible for a shorter quarantine period of 10 nights upon arrival. Pets originally from Australia are one exemption; a copy of Australian export documents is required to be eligible for the 10-night quarantine upon arrival.

Another exemption applies to pets with microchip identification that has been verified by the competent authority in the country of export prior to completing the Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT) at least 7 months prior to export.

If this ID process has been implemented in the country of origin prior to the pet’s pre-export vet work, they may also be eligible for 10 nights quarantine instead of 30 nights upon arrival. However, eligibility for this exemption varies from government to government.

Planning and preparation

To ensure a smooth and stress-free experience, we recommend starting the process 10-12 months prior to export, whenever possible. This will give you enough time and allow some breathing space in case there are any delays with quarantine or any other issues that may arise.

We understand how important your furry family members are to you. That’s why we are committed to ensuring a safe and seamless relocation process for both you and your pets. With these new updates to the import process, it’s essential to be well-informed and prepared to avoid any potential issues or delays. If you have any questions or concerns about the new regulations, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
